Six stops that carry the day. Do them in this order and you'll swim against the crowd.

The itinerary

One unhurried day

Arrive at opening and walk straight past the entrance exhibits — everyone else stops there, and you'll have them to yourself on the way out. Head for Africa! while the elephants are out and the light is low. By eleven, drift toward the big cats, then let the midday heat push you into the Arctic building and the aquarium.

Eat an early or late lunch; the noon rush is real. The last ninety minutes are the golden ones: thinner paths, longer shadows, and animals stirring for the evening feed.
